Aetna Student Health in New York

Aetna Student Health became the largest student-plan carrier in New York this year — NYU and SVA moved to it, joining Columbia, Fordham, Cornell, and eighteen others. If your card says Aetna, you already have a therapist in-network.

We're a boutique, culturally attuned practice in-network with Aetna, and students and young adults are most of who we see. Each school below has its own page with that plan's specifics — who's enrolled, the plan year, the waiver deadline — so you can check yours in a minute.

How it works

Four things, none of them hard.

1 · Your card

Find it in your school's health portal or the Aetna app. "Aetna Student Health" on the card is all we need to start; email a photo to info@liumentalhealth.com if you'd like us to check first.

2 · Book through Headway

Headway handles the insurance side and shows your copay up front. No referral needed for most Aetna Student Health plans.

3 · Be in New York

Sessions are online; you just need to be physically in New York (or Florida) at session time. Dorm, apartment, library — all fine.

4 · Keep going

Student plan years run through the summer, so therapy continues over breaks as long as you're in-state. Graduating? We plan the transition before it happens.

Upstate and Westchester

Aetna schools across the state.

Carrier assignments follow each school's 2026–27 health-office publications (Pratt, Juilliard, and Brooklyn Law were last confirmed for 2025–26). Plans change yearly; we verify before anyone is charged. On a UnitedHealthcare or Anthem student plan instead? Those schools are here.

Aetna Student Health questions

What is Aetna Student Health, and is it the same as regular Aetna?

Aetna Student Health is Aetna's line of plans sold through colleges. The card says Aetna, the claims go to Aetna, and the plan uses Aetna's provider network — so an in-network Aetna therapist is in-network for your student plan. Benefits (copays, deductibles) are set per school.

Which New York schools use Aetna Student Health for 2026–27?

In the city: Columbia, Barnard, NYU (new this year), Fordham, The New School, St. John's, SVA (new this year), Pratt, Juilliard, Brooklyn Law, NYIT, Touro, and SUNY Maritime's domestic plan. Upstate: Cornell, Syracuse, University of Rochester, RIT, RPI, Ithaca College, Manhattanville, Iona, and New York Medical College. Each has its own page above with that school's plan details.

How much does a session cost with Aetna Student Health?

Your plan's outpatient mental health copay — often a flat amount per session, sometimes a coinsurance after a deductible. Headway shows the exact figure before you book, and we confirm it during benefits verification so there are no surprises.

Do I need a referral from the campus health center?

Usually not. Aetna Student Health plans are PPO-style and most cover outpatient therapy without a referral. We check your plan's rules when we verify benefits.

I waived the school plan and I'm on my parents' insurance instead.

Then it depends on that plan. If it's Aetna, Cigna, Curative, Anthem, Oscar, Oxford, or UnitedHealthcare, we're likely in-network; send us a photo of the card and we'll tell you within a day. Statements for a parent's plan go to the policyholder, which we'll talk through with you.
